British Values at The Lady Byron School

Our Values Statement

At The Lady Byron School, we believe in supporting every child to grow into a confident, caring and responsible young person. Our approach to teaching British Values is woven through all areas of school life and helps us to develop the whole child.

We know children learn best when values such as respect, responsibility, kindness and fairness are lived out by all members of our school community. Staff, families and students work together to create a safe and happy environment where everyone can thrive.

What are British Values?

The Government has identified five key values that schools should promote. Here’s how we bring them to life for our students:

Democracy

Every child has a voice. This might be through speech, pictures, symbols, gestures or body language. We listen carefully and give children real choices about things that matter to them.

We also have a School Council, where students help to make decisions and share their views on school life.

Rule of Law

Children learn about right and wrong, and the importance of rules in keeping everyone safe and happy. They are supported to understand that actions have consequences, and to take responsibility for their behaviour.

We work hard to provide a consistent and secure environment where children feel safe and ready to learn.

Individual Liberty

We encourage every child to develop independence and confidence. Students learn that they have rights – including the right to say “yes” or “no” – and that with rights come responsibilities.

Taking part in fundraising and community events such as Red Nose Day or Children in Need helps children to see the value of helping others and builds self-esteem.

Mutual Respect

Respect is at the heart of our school. We make sure every student is included and valued, and we create opportunities for children to work with a wide range of people—whether that’s peers, visitors, theatre groups, or sports coaches.

By taking part in activities in school and in the local community, students learn to build positive relationships and value the contributions of others.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

We celebrate diversity and ensure everyone is respected, regardless of faith, heritage, ability, gender or race.

Our assemblies, celebrations, visits and curriculum give children opportunities to learn about different cultures and traditions, helping them to develop respect and understanding for others.

SMSC: Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development

Alongside British Values, we also focus on the wider development of each child through SMSC. This means:

  • Spiritual – exploring beliefs, reflecting, using creativity, learning about themselves and others.
  • Moral – understanding right and wrong, consequences, and ethical choices.
  • Social – learning to get along with others, joining in community life, working as part of a team.
  • Cultural – celebrating diversity, experiencing arts and culture, learning about Britain’s democratic system.

Examples include taking part in theatre and music, sports, volunteering, and community visits. SMSC is embedded across our curriculum and in everyday school life.

Beyond the Classroom

We also provide extra opportunities to support children’s growth and confidence, such as:

  • Student Council – giving students a say in school life.
  • Assemblies – exploring themes like kindness, community and celebrations.
  • Therapy – specialist support for students individually and in groups.
  • Duke of Edinburgh Award – helping older students build resilience and independence.
  • Community visits – encouraging students to practise their skills in real-world settings, and to feel part of the wider community.

Working Together

We measure the impact of our approach by listening to students, engaging with families, and ensuring staff provide consistent care and support. By working together, we aim to give every child the skills, confidence and values they need to live a happy and fulfilling life as part of their community.
